It's not about the fans liking Nike
It's about the recruits liking Nike. Surprising as it may be, the shoe and apparel supplier is important to kids coming out of high school and in high school.
There are even high schools that have contracts with the shoe and apparel companies, and you can bet those high school coaches know how to steer their kids to the "proper" schools.
Nike is the brand most of the kids want. If Under Armour was huge with the kids, Maryland (as the "flagship" school) would be reaping the benefits the way that Oregon did with Nike.
